I usually like to keep DessertBuzz focused on New York but this news was just too big.  Maine’s Kennebec Journal reports that Maine’s legislature is  poised to make the whoopie pie the official state dessert.  Seems like a reasonable idea to me whoopie pies are crowd pleasers even if Jacques Torres never heard of them–but hold on!

The Journal continues: ”On Monday, at a hearing before the Legislature’s State and Local Government Committee, Rep. Donald Pilon dismissed whoopies as “frosting delivery vehicles” and suggested that wild-blueberry pie deserves to be the state’s official dessert.  Did he steal that line from DessertBuzz? (more…)

Jacques Torres opens in Rockefeller Center

A warm Jacques Torres Cookie

The Feast has a nice video of Jacques Torres showing off his new location inside Rockefeller Center which opened today.  They report that the store will be open 10:00 to 8:00 p.m. on weekdays and 10:00 – 5:00 p.m. on weekends.  H-E-L-L-O cookie and hot chocolate lunch! (more…)

Honey carrot cake

I have always been suspicious of carrot cake.  A dessert that’s made from one of the healthiest vegetables just seems to go against the very spirit of what dessert is all about.  That said, I never met a dessert I didn’t like, even one that’s made from beta carotene-infused pulp. So it was with an open mind that I approached pastry chef Michal Shelkowitz’s honey carrot cake from Dovetail. The waiter called  it “very special”. (more…)
