Green gauge plums from New Zealand

Last Wednesday a friend took me to Le Bernardin for lunch and aside from being my first visit to a 3-star Michelin restaurant, I was excited to finally meet one of the rockstars of the culinary world.  Someone who has won James Beard awards and been recognized as one of the top chefs in the US.  He has even been a judge on Top Chef–the real standard of your status in the culinary world!  Of course I am referring to Michael Laiskonis, Le Bernadin’s executive pastry chef (no disrespect to the other executive chef at Le Bernardin, Eric–something?). Classic pasty creme with hazelnut and a hint of Meyer Lemon

On Saturday, the day before the freebie-fest that is Macaron Day NYC, I checked out Bisousciao and also stopped into DessertTruck Works to see what kind of treats they had in store for the big event.  They were selling their s’mores flavor along with a new macaron that featured hazelnut pasty creme and a hint of Meyer lemon inside.  I also checked out the dark chocolate as my baseline for the day.  As usual, their slightly oversized Macarons sold for $2.00 each. Bonnat Cacao real del Xoconuzco 75% - the real deal

I recently attended a small chocolate show sponsored by the Global Cocoa Project, an organization that’s working to raise awareness about Fair Trade  practices in the cocoa industry.  One of the best things about the show was learning that some of my favorite chocolate bars are produced by companies who are also comitted to fair trade.  You can read more about Fair Trade chocolate here. Updated: After a tight finish with three people guessing the correct photo… the winner is…Victoria  from District Chocoholic who correctly guessed that the macarons from photo #1 were made by a pro, in this case, recently featured Executive Pastry Chef Antonio Bachour of Quattro.  The macarons made by “the hack” were actually mine, made during DessertTruck Works super-fun macaron classes. Check them out here.
