2012 Vendy Awards dessert category: Melt Bakery wins it!
17 Sep 2012, Posted by Melt Bakery inSaturday was the 8th annual Vendy Awards on Govenor’s Island and Piaztlan Authentic Mexican won the coveted (savory-centric) Vendy Cup. However, I was happy to see Melt Bakery finally take home the best dessert vendor prize. It was a beautiful day for the event–sunny, but not too warm–perfect for stuffing yourself silly for 5 hours!
Melt Bakery arrived with an entire cart full of mini versions of their signature artisanal ice cream sandwiches. My two favorites were the malted chocolate rum ice cream with “crackly” chocolate cookie (pictured above) and peach ice cream with brown butter bourbon shortbread cookies (pictured below).
Andy’s Italian ices also impressed me with their light and flavorful ices. I tried three different ices and my favorite was the chocolate “cream-ice” with chocolate covered pretzel balls. Salty-sweet is always a winner and after eating all day the lighter ice-based dessert was a welcome break.
Coolhaus brought three fantatsic ice cream and cookie combinations. My favorite was dirty mint chip ice cream with double chocolate sea salt cookie. Despite their well rehearsed acceptance speech they didn’t win this year–hopefully they’ll be back for a another chance.
Monsiuer Singh Lassi brought lassi frozen pops and mini-drinks. They should get an award for coolest packaging, everybody was commenting on how much they liked these little jars. What’s lassi? A blend of probiotic yogurts and spices and other ingredients. They tasted a bit like kefir or other drinkable yogurts but with more flavor.
DessertBuzz favorite Imperial Woodpecker Sno-Balls brought three different snow cones in mini format. My favorite was the Mardi Gras King Cake. Visit their shop where they have dozens of different flavors and a few different options for toppings including condensed milk.
The La Belle Torte Truck had a few things that I really liked–their signature cannoli and their frozen hot chocolate. The frozen hot chocolate wasn’t sweet at all and had a nice chocolate flavor.

Sounds like your Princess is a real trooper with all those doctor’s visits. You have a very full week. I too am amazed at what large families can accomplish. I have one daughter and she is 13. Have a fabulous week!
