    Christopher Norman Chocolate

    Christopher Norman chocolates

Christopher Norman chocolates based in lower Manhattan really brought their A game to this year’s New York Chocolate Show. In terms of packaging they had the best looking gift style boxes of the show. Many vendors had beautiful wood boxes and fancy ribbons but the Chris Norman boxes had an artistic quality that would impress any gift recipient. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to taste too many of their chocolates because of the crowd however, the two I tasted, the “Manhattan Dark” and “caramel” classic truffles were superb. I was surprised at the snap, (indicating freshness), of the Dark truffle. They also had a large booth, enthusiastic staff and about 100 small paintings on the walls. Visit their website here. Here’s a google map of their store’s location.

    Luv's Brownies

    Luv’s Brownies

Besides the scheduled live demonstrations, the New York Chocolate Show only had one vendor who was baking their product fresh on the spot and that was Luv’s Brownies. These brownies were very rich and chocolaty and definitely of the fudgier school rather than the cakier style.

The other vendor’s should send Aundrea “Thank You” letters since anyone who came to the show thinking they could avoid buying too much chocolate only had to walk within 20 feet of the Luv’s booth before being overwhelmed by the smell of freshly melted chocolate chips.

The story of Aundrea Lacy and Luv’s Brownies is quite interesting. Aundrea had to overcome many obstacles to build her business. You can read more about it here on her website.

    Amano's Madagascar chocolate bar

    .
    Amano Chocolate
There are many reasons to recommend Amano chocolate: They make their chocolate in small batches, the owners have a high commitment to excellence, they pay their growers significantly more than “fair trade” organizations and many other producers, they are highly regarded by chocolate connoisseurs on the internet. That’s all cool, but the fact is, I wouldn’t give a rats ass about those reasons if the chocolate wasn’t good. Luckily it is. Its superb in fact. If you like the dark flavorful stuff that isn’t too sweet you will love this chocolate. It also has an incredibly strong flavor without being bitter. Read on for more about Amano.

Warning: forced analogy coming up. If Amano chocolate made cars they would be Ferrari. Amano produces three great single origin dark chocolates. Two from Venezuela: Ocumare and Cayagua and one from Madagascar. Ferrari, by comparison, offers 4 models for 2007. Ok, maybe Amano and its creator Art Pollard, aren’t quite as flashy as a Ferrari and maybe they don’t make cheesy designer sunglasses (perhaps they should) however they definitely share one trait with Ferrari: their product is in a class by itself. Well two traits really. Its also expensive but worth it.

My personal favorite is their new Madagascar bar. If you currently consider yourself a black belt chocolate connoisseur - you must try this bar. You will like the Madagascar and Amano in general if you like Green and Black’s 70% Dark, Dagoba’s New Moon 74% (this is slightly sweeter) or E. Guittard’s Ambanja 65%.

For more about Amano and a great interview with Art Pollard check out CacaoLab. Or check out the Amano website.
