I don’t understand it. Just when I was 100% convinced that the island of Manhattan was more played than Rudy Gulianni using the words “nine eleven” I learn of two great food experiences that suggest Manhattan still has some cool left if you know where to look. I already wrote about Dessert Truck which only sells desserts. Somewhere to Eat on the other hand is a complete dinner experience.
Somewhere to Eat seeks to address the lack of good non-Dominican dining options in Inwood. Our meal consisted of 5 superb courses + dinner and dessert wines. All the courses were well thought out for fit and placement and were worthy of any fine New York restaurant. The short ribs with homemade papardelle and wine-based reduction sauce and the white bean soup were especially delicious.
What about the dessert?
For dessert it was Vanilla bean Panna Cotta with candied citrus spiced syrup and almond tuile. This was served with Bonny Doon Muscat Vin De Glacierie - a sweet dessert wine. The panna cotta itself was outstanding. It had a strong vanilla bean flavor and was not too sweet. In fact it really wasn’t sweet at all which made the pairing with the dessert wine perfect. The candied citrus was quite bitter which I believe was also meant to offset the sweet of the cream and sugar although it might have been too bitter for someone who likes a pool of melted dark chocolate next to their cold creamy desserts.
I can’t really say enough good things about the food, the wines or the dessert. The extreme attention to detail of the dishes made the whole dining experience outstanding. I hope to attend another session soon.
