Grand opening of the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck in New York City

The unstoppable juggernaut of social media behind the grand opening of the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck’s brick and mortar store was something to behold.  It seemed like everyone on Twitter (that I follow at least) was multi-tweeting about this event.  You would think we were about to land the first person on mars.  Instead, a very popular ice cream truck did land on the Lower East Side (right next to a store that sells Blue Bell Ice Cream).

The line on Saturday was quite long - but moved fast

When I arrived at 6:00 the line was about 35 people deep.  They had a staffer working outside doing crowd control and to make sure the small space inside the shop didn’t get too crowded.  Whenever the crowd got rowdy they would threaten to bring in the Hell’s Angels from a few blocks away (not really).

The shop itself was very pleasant with fresh sunflowers, a unicorn mural on the wall and a rocking sound system.

Monday sundae with Nutella-lined waffle cone

We ordered a Salty Pimp ($5.00) which has vanilla ice cream, dulce de leche, sea salt and is dipped in dark chocolate.  My friend Kazu Miura ordered a Monday Sundae ($6.00) which has twist ice cream (chocolate and vanilla), a nutella lined waffle cone, dulce de leche, sea salt and whipped cream.

It’s hard to say which one I liked better–you really can’t go wrong.  They both have that salty sweet thing going on.  The hype should die down just enough so that you won’t have to wait too long to check it out.  Do it now before it gets cold.
