One of the coolest and most accessible food events in New York City is the annual Macaron Day.  This year the event will be held on Wednesday March 20.  One addition to this year’s offerings include Macaron Day aprons for sale with proceeds going to City Harvest.

Nut-free pumpkin macaron from The Macaron Parlour's new shop

First look: The Macaron Parlour team of  pastry chefs Christina Ha and Simon Tung have opened a bricks and mortar store on 111 St. Marks Place.

I tried a nut-free seasonal pumpkin macaron and felt compelled to report how good it was.  I was expecting some kind of stand-in for a real, almond meal based macaron, but instead I got a 100% legit, 100% gourmet, macaron with no kooky texture or flavor!  It features a dark and white chocolate and pumpkin ganache with pumpkin pie-style spices.  Christina said she “just used ground pumpkins seeds instead of almond  flour”.  It didn’t take her long to nail the recipe–happily noting “It worked pretty well the [very] first time!”  I guess if you study macarons with Pierre Herme you learn a few things!  Who knew?  A full report on my visit to their shop will follow shortly.

S'amore made-to-order almond salted dark chocolate s'more

The Hester Street Market opened their season to huge crowds on Saturday and the food stalls seemed to be the biggest draw. There were plenty of all-new savory and sweet vendors in attendance so I brought a civilian accomplice in order try as much as possible.  Here are a few of the vendors I visited.

The beautiful macarons from Laduree

Though DessertBuzz has reviewed many of these macarons before, I thought our readers were entitled to a second opinion–especially when it comes to a topic as contentious as NYC macarons.  Luckily, guest columnist Elle was kind enough to check in with a report.

"Wancko" cookie - peanut butter chocolate chip and pretzel chunks

Of all the gatherings of “gourmet” food carts and street food vendors in Manhattan I think Madison Square Eats has the highest percentage of great vendors.  On the savory side,  there are too many to mention them all.  Here’s a select few: Calexico Cart, Asia Dog, and Roberta’s (real wood oven) pizzas.  On the sweet side there’s plenty of standouts as well.  Some of my favorite picks are featured below. Bisous Ciao had the NYC macaron crown for almost 2 years

Why is it so important for New Yorkers to know what other people think is “the best”?   With the opening of Laduree in New York City there has been a considerable amount of macaron hype, most of it around how superior their macarons are to everything else. Last week I finally got to try about eight of them (thank you Doctore) and I can safely say they are the best this city has to offer right now.  They feature perfect buttercream, super-soft almond flour cookie shell and insanely strong flavors–despite flying 3600 miles from Paris every day!   (more…)
