Archive for the 'New York Food & Wine Fest.' Category

Friday night was the New York City Wine and Food Festival cupcake-fest “Sweet” event.  This is the only event where you can try desserts from thirty of New York’s top pastry chefs.   Everyone from Le Bernardin to the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck was there to show off their best “sweet” plates.   I can tell you that there were a lot of cupcakes!  Last year The Doughnut Plant won the fan voting for best of the show with their Creme Brulee doughnut.  This year, Elizabeth Karmel from Hill Country Barbecue Market slayed all with her über-comfort, peanut butter and jelly cupcake.  Read on to see some of our favorite desserts from Sweet. Each doughnut is hand-blowtorched

The Doughnut Plant creme brulee doughnut

Last October the Doughnut Plant stole the show at the New York Food and Wine “Sweet” event.  They brought a selection of doughnuts, including a delicious jelly doughnut, but their creme brulee doughnut, which was hand-blow-torched on the spot was the hit of the show and netted them the prize for best dessert at the 2011 Sweet event.  Tickets for the 2012 event–where you can try desserts from Dominique Ansel, Joe Murphy of Jean Georges, Elizabeth Falkner and many others are still available. Donatella cannoli by pastry chef Andrea Jarosh

I was happy to hear that Andrea Jarosh, one of my favorite young pastry chefs was going to be bringing her skills to the 2011 New York Food and Wine Sweet event.   Andrea is a native New Yorker so it was no surprise that she decided to showcase a dessert with a rich history that’s also become quite popular recently.  If you think all cannoli have to be sugary sweet and heavy, you owe yourself a visit to Donatella restaurant to see what the real deal tastes like.  These cannoli are incredibly light and flavorful and have created a loyal following in Chelsea.  Watch the video of Andrea at the New York Food and Wine Sweet after the jump. Ashley Brauze from DB Bistro Moderne - Plum Delice: Ricotta Mousse, cornmeal poundcake, plum gelee, candied corn

Ashley Brauze from DB Bistro Moderne made one of my favorite desserts from the 2011 New York Food and Wine “Sweet” event.  She said her plum-based dessert was meant to compliment all the chocolate desserts expected to be on hand.  It was a thoughtful strategy that worked because I found her “Plum Delice”  (Ricotta Mousse, cornmeal poundcake, plum gelee and candied corn) to be exceptionally light and flavorful–the candied corn was a great touch as well.  Video after the jump… (more…)

Johnny Iuzzini's Crispy Godiva Chocolate and Praline Pop with Cranberry

Earlier this month I attended the New York Food and Wine “Sweet” event, sponsored by Godiva.  One of the star attractions was Top Chef Just Desserts judge and Executive Pastry Chef of the three-star Jean Georges restaurant in New York.  His booth was mobbed all night with people asking for photos and for advice about their desserts.  I heard at least one person tell him about his crazy-ass dessert business ideas.  I have to give Iuzzini credit, he accommodated each and every visitor and listened as intently as an Upper West Side therapist.  See the video after the jump… (more…)

Plated dessert from Karen DeMasco of Locana Verde

Last night was the New York Food & Wine Festival “Sweet” event and the desserts on display were truly awesome.  Rarely are so many of New York’s best pastry chefs and their desserts all in one place at the same time.  Here’s Part 1 (Part @ is here) of some  of best plates on hand:

Johnny Iuzzini's Crispy Godiva Chocolate and Praline Pop with Cranberry

Johnny Iuzzini’s booth was mobbed all night.  I thought he would win the fan prize but he was just beaten by The Doughnut Plant.  More from Johnny Iuzzini of Jean Georges on Dessertbuzz. (more…)
