Sarabeth's excellent Pain Du Matin

I skipped out on a bike race this morning so I decided to use the time slot productively–sampling fresh baked goods and pastry from Chelsea Market.  I don’t usually arrive there early enough to really sample the best that Amy’s Bread and Sarabeth’s Bakery have to offer–so this was a great opportunity.  The “dirty little secret” of bakeries, as Francois Payard once told me, is that you can have the best recipe and best bakers in the world but if  customers don’t consume the goods shortly after their baked–they will always be mediocre. One of the classiest cookbooks I have seen this year.

Sarabeth’s Bakery is one of the classiest cookbooks I have seen in a while.  Rizzoli certainly didn’t skimp on photo or paper quality either.  You’ll probably want to frame many of the stunning photos and hang them in your kitchen.  If you have a baker or pastry chef on your Hanukah or Christmas list – you simply can’t go wrong with this 320 page,  large format cookbook.  “Sarabeth’s Bakery: from my hands to yours” by Sarabeth Levine is really part coffee table book and part cookbook.
