Blossom's orange currant scone

Blossom Restaurant (and Cafe Blossom) recently opened up a vegan bakery right next door to their popular take-out shop on Ninth Avenue in Chelsea.  This is pretty big deal.  Besides Baby Cakes, I’m not aware of any other vegan bakeries in NYC that exclusively offer pastry and bakery items.  Peace Foods Cafe and Whole Earth Bakery and a few others, offer lunch and savory items in addition to their vegan bakeries. Spot Dessert Bar's heart shaped macrons

Valentine’s day is around the corner so if you’re feeling the crush of billions of marketing dollars telling you that you must get something red or heart-related for your partner–here are some suggestions. (more…)

Vegan Chocolate Chip Brownie from Baby Cakes Bakery by Erin McKenna

The all-vegan Baby Cakes Bakery had some killer chocolate chip brownies at the  New York Food and Wine “Sweet” event.  I seriously could have eaten about ten of these things.  Not sure anyone would ever be able to tell that these brownies were vegan and gluten free.   (more…)

Lulu's Sweet Apothecary (vegan) cake batter soft serve

With all the hype about the opening of the Big Gay Ice Cream Store,  I thought it would be cool to feature their East Village neighbor, the  non-dairy, super-low-key, VEGAN alternative Lulu’s Sweet Apothecary.  This tiny 100% vegan ice cream shop sells what many bloggers believe is the best vegan ice cream flavor in New York–cake batter soft serve.   (more…)

Vegan carrot cake from Vegan Divas in NYC

A few weeks ago  I wrote about how bakers and pastry chefs can create great tasting vegan desserts with a little effort.   Case in point is the simple, not-too-heavy carrot cake from Vegan Divas.   (more…)

Vegan Divas Chocolate Cake from Garden Of Eden

The popularity of vegan desserts and pastry continues to grow as more people begin to focus on the health of the foods they eat. And yet there is still so much resistance to vegan desserts.  Why is that?

There’s actually no reason why a vegan dark chocolate cake can’t taste as good as it’s egg and dairy containing cousin! Here’s the thing– in pastry, fat is king.  It’s one of the most important elements of a successful dessert.  Fat is what delivers the flavor to your tongue and taste buds.  Why do peanut butter, ice cream and croissants taste so damn good? The fat!. (more…)
