With all the hype about the opening of the Big Gay Ice Cream Store, I thought it would be cool to feature their East Village neighbor, the non-dairy, super-low-key, VEGAN alternative Lulu’s Sweet Apothecary. This tiny 100% vegan ice cream shop sells what many bloggers believe is the best vegan ice cream flavor in New York–cake batter soft serve.
DessertBuzz was way late to this party but I have to say this place lived up to the hype of over 400+ positive Yelp reviews. Stepping into the shop is like taking a time machine to an old fashioned apothecary. The interior is dark and woody and makes you feel like you’re not in New York.
The cake batter soft serve is just a really unique and great flavor. The closest ice cream flavor I can compare it to would be butter pecan because it has a similar sweet/buttery thing going on. However, it’s much lighter than real ice cream but not icy like Soy Delicious or one of those non-dairy products. Of course, you can also get sundaes and all kinds of toppings like marshmallow and hot fudge.
Interestingly, Lulu’s doesn’t just use one main ingredient to make their vegan ice cream. Some of their flavors are nut-based (almonds and cashews) others are coconut-based and finally, some, like the cake batter soft serve, are soy-based. This is great if you have a nut or soy allergy because there’s always and alternative.
