The day before the New York Chocolate Show I was at Barbao on the Upper West Side and noticed they were featuring Quady Essensia dessert wine on their menu.  This was great news because these are two of my favorite purveyors of dessert products.  Barbao has unique and very delicious desserts made to order and  Quady makes some of the best dessert wines in the US.  When I visited the show I got to chat with Andrew Quady and I asked him why his Essensia orange muscat dessert wine goes so well with chocolate and desserts.

If you think dessert wine isn’t for you I urge you to give it a chance as that is what I used to think.  I realized that it can actually be a great compliment to dark chocolate or other special desserts.  This comes from someone who does not typically drink wine with dinner.

    More New York Chocolate show:

A few weeks ago Whole Foods had a 70% bar on a “super sale”.  I had never heard of the brand.  It was a 70% single origin bar using beans from Colombia called Santander and for $1.50 I couldn’t resist.  It turned out to be pretty damn good and when I returned to buy the motherload some chocolate fiend had beaten me to it by scarfing up the remaining stock!

Fast forward to the New York Chocolate Show and here they are.  If you are hitting the show Sunday check out all their 60% and up bars and make sure you get a handful of 70% nibs too.

Every year at the chocolate show the Cotton Tree Lodge from Belize has always intrigued me so this year I spoke with Jeff Pzena about their eco-lodge and also asked them to explain their chocolate making display.  Check out the video below.

Happy happy clown from the New York Chocolate Show

In keeping with the Chocolate Show’s tradition of being a great place to bring the kids here’s a happy little clown made out of chocolate!  Artist and master chocolatier Hakan Martensson from Fika Choklad sculpted this adorable little guy special for the chocolate show.

    Oliver Kita Chocolates

I could have titled this post: “Who shrunk the show?” as this year’s New York Chocolate Show is about half the size as in the past.  The crowds were smaller too however two of the casualties of the smaller size are Marys Chocolate of Japan and Amano both of which skipped the show this year.

Here are some items that caught my eye today:

More Oliver Kita chocolates from the Hudson Valley

There were some real standouts in the boxed chocolate category by William Dean out of Largo FL and Oliver Kita from Rhinebeck, NY.  The thing I like about both these chocolate companies is that despite the fact that they look good they take the taste of the chocolate seriously too.

Check out the cool packaging of the William Dean gift box.  The two halves come apart to reveal the chocolate inside the box.  Very cool.
