    Clinton Street Bakery

The top NYC food web site, Serious Eats New York, is putting together their own “Best chocolate chip cookie in New York” feature.  They are going neighborhood by neighborhood and then will compare each regional winner against one another to determine an overall winner.

I have mixed feeling about this feature.  One the one hand, they do a great job, with superb photos objective reviews -heck they even use good grammar!  On the other hand, I feel this is one area, perhaps the only area, where Dessertbuzz has really put some time in and amassed a decent list.  I know I am still missing some key reviews like Petrossian and Fairway… but dammit mine was first!  Maybe they will let me help  judge the finalist?

My ongoing review is below.  Enjoy.

Only the best chocolate chip cookies in New York (Manhattan).  How many am I missing? The latest additions are from Bread Alone, Chikalicious Dessert Club and  Clinton Street Baking Company.  Very different but excellent chocolate chip cookies.

Bread Alone: Green Markets aren’t just for Vegetables!

Bread Alone Chocolate Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookie

Green markets in NYC seem to be cropping up all over the place these days.  If there’s an unused sliver of land and some shade chances are a green market will follow.  This is a good thing.  Often, the bakedery items from these markets can be excellent if you know what vendors to hit.

One of my favorite green market bakeries is Bread Alone.  They hail from the Catskills where people have enough time to get up at 3:00 a.m. and make really good bread.  Their whole wheat sourdough kills when toasted and though it costs $5 it’s a monster sized loaf. (more…)

The latest competitor for the DessertBuzz best chocolate chip cookie in New York competition is from Clinton Street Baking Company.  A very solid and tasty chocolate chip cookie.

I wish I had bought this cookie early in the morning when they were fresh baked because this is a serious contender for New York Cookie supremacy.  It was really good even though it was about 10 hours old.  The Clinton Street Baking Company cookie definitely sits on the crunchy and cooked side of the scale in terms of firmness.  It also uses top end chocolate like many of its high-end peers.  Pick up a few before going to the theater down the street to see a show about another Clinton.

Batch: The best chocolate chip cookie that is actually baked?

    Pichet Ong's new bakery: Batch

Pichet Ong’s “Batch” is sometimes called “the take out bakery for P*ong”. Well, that like saying “I’ll meet you at Famous Original Ray’s Pizza” - it doesn’t tell you anything.

Like the Bush presidency, what can I say about Magnolia Bakery that has not already been written? Yelp has over 646 reviews of this place! Reviews of Magnolia break down into three categories:

    The Awestruck Tourist:
“It was so-worth the 45 minute wait!” “This place is my total dream bakery!” “I am obsessed with Sex in the City and have tried to do as many NYC things as Carrie does on the show” (these are all actual quotes).
