The top NYC food web site, Serious Eats New York, is putting together their own “Best chocolate chip cookie in New York” feature.  They are going neighborhood by neighborhood and then will compare each regional winner against one another to determine an overall winner.

I have mixed feeling about this feature.  One the one hand, they do a great job, with superb photos objective reviews -heck they even use good grammar!  On the other hand, I feel this is one area, perhaps the only area, where Dessertbuzz has really put some time in and amassed a decent list.  I know I am still missing some key reviews like Petrossian and Fairway… but dammit mine was first!  Maybe they will let me help  judge the finalist?

My ongoing review is below.  Enjoy.

    ————————-

Only the best chocolate chip cookies in New York (Manhattan).  How many am I missing? The latest additions are from Bread Alone, Chikalicious Dessert Club and  Clinton Street Baking Company.  Very different but excellent chocolate chip cookies.

    Jessica,

I am going to find those cookies if its the last thing I do! I promise.

Not sure if you’re covering Brooklyn but there’s a new pizza place in Carroll Gardens that only serves pizza, beer, and chocolate chip cookies. The cookies are good! I only had them once so far but was impressed with them. South Brooklyn Pizza at 451 Court St. I do also love Levain’s cookies.

I’m still a fan of Times Square Hot Bagel (I think that’s the name) at 41 St. and 7 Ave. by Carmine’s.

Don’t know if it’s against the rules to nominate my own company, but I swear we have got a great one….along with so many other great ones. It’s in the ‘MOM KOOKIEs’ division of the site. There is a plain chocolate chunk or if you’d like to see something a little more involved check out the ‘PMS KOOKIES’(newly renamed THIS CHICK BAKES). You can also find our who sells our product daily on the site.
We’d be happy to furnish you with some samples if you’d like.

    Thanks so much,

    Jennifer,

I am not sure if you are aware that i have already reviewed PMS Kookies back in May:

    http://dessertbuzz.com/?cat=64

I am also planning to list the PMS Kookie Kompany in this feature. Great stuff, who does your artwork?

    Niko

Abby, I’ll check it out. For this competition, Ithought I would limit the choices to Manhattan just so I would have a chance to review most of the contenders…but a road trip to Carroll Gardens for Pizza and Cookies sounds good.

    My top three:

    1. Chocolate Bar
    2. Jacques Torres
    3. Baked

You might also want to try the chocolate chip cookie at Treats Truck and the one from Betsy’s Place (available at some Dean and Deluca’s), as well as the one from Grey Dog Coffee, and from Jack’s Stir Brew Coffee.

I’m going to have to say Jacques Torres choc chip cookie is the best, though I love the Levain for it’s uniqueness. I’ve been making the NY Times Ultimate since the article came out a month or so ago and LOVE them. Really think there is something to 1)the chilled dough and 2)the chocolate “disks”, like JT uses. I LOVE CCC’s!

the Levain bakery’s cookies are the best i’ve had…

Bouley Bakery. No contest. The perfect combination of sweet and salty cookie dough, slighly crisp exterior and chewy inside without being underbaked. Best on the planet, not just NYC.

Ok we all just shared 2 x chocolate chip cookies from Silver Moon Bakery - omg you are right Niko - they were delicious………lucky I rode 60 miles or so to indulge

Believe it or not, Subway (yes, the chain), has a most excellent chocolate chipper, and is the tasty blue collar cookie of choice for this bootstrapped lady!

Subway huh? OK I have one 2 blocks from my house I’ll try them. No cookie prejudices here. Thanks Bootstrapped Lady.

Another Subway recommendation. I guess I’ll have to try them now.

Man reading this post made me desperately want some chocolate chip cookies.

Well, these are some good one take your pick. Nice site BTW.

    Neeks-
    1. love this blog/site. You are a friggin’ genius for thinking of this.
    2. My vote: City Bakery.
    3. Craig makes a mean chocolate chippie too- and a healthy(ish) one, even!
    4. Jacques Torres rocks. Better even when you make them from scratch at home (the recipe was published in the Times) and refrigerate the dough overnight.

    Thanks Sarah!

Feature on City Bakery up now. I’ll factor your preferences in.

Jack’s Coffee (at least the one near South Street Seaport) - amazing choc. chip cookies. Try them and I am sure you will add them to the list

Lauren, thanks for the tip, I;ll check them out.

No comment. Ha ha. Except too bad I forgot to look for PMS Kookie Kompany at the Fancy Food Show.

PMS Kookies are now available at Joe Coffee shoppes in NYC…

WOW, this is amazing - and bookmarked !! and will absolutely be in my pocket on my next trip to NYC !! :)

Hi Kerrin, Sad update on Payard. According to an interview there are no plans to reopen!

    Ugh!

Jacque Torres has the MOST amazing chocolate chip cookies ever. You should try it out if you have the chance. Instead of little chips, he puts in large chunks that swirl into a half-chocolate-half-cookie piece of heaven. yum :)

    Sabrina,

They are listed here in this review :)

    Niko

    :)

i love cookies… how did you make your smiley faces??

    .

You’ll always be first in my book. I went to Pret on 42 and 5th today. It was so dry and hard. One of the worst things I’ve ever eaten. :-( Maybe the one on 38 and 7th (that Serious Eats tested) is the best one.

Thanks Jessica! Say, have you had the Chikalicious Dessert Club chocolate chip cookies? at 3 for $2.00 I have a feeling they are similar to the one’s you likes at Times Square hot bagels.

    Something to say?
