2009 Vendy Award Dessert Truck Finalist

The Vendy Awards took place today at the Queens Museum of Art and DessertBuzz was there to check out the three Dessert Truck nominees: The Big Gay Ice Cream Truck, The Wafels and Dinges Truck and The Cupcake Stop Truck.

Bacon everywhere!  One trend linked all three dessert truck nominees at this year’s Vendy Awards: They all featured pork products on their desserts.   Caramelized bacon, candied bacon and pulled pork were found all over the place.
Both the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck and the Cupcake Stop had Vendy specials that included unique bacon toppings.

Wafels and Dinges has a pulled pork topping that was not available at the show but was being promoted heavily at the truck.

The Big Gay Ice Cream Truck featured a Vendy special ice cream sandwich the “Choinkwich” - your choice of ice cream rolled in caramelized bacon bits.  According to the attendees I spoke to it was  excellent.  They also had a special sundae with Mexican hot chocolate brewed with spices and covered with cocoa nibs and whipped cream.  Many attendees just stuck with their classic soft-serve vanilla or chocolate and large selection of unusual toppings such as Trix cereal.

    Cupcake Stop Elvis cupcake

The cupcake stop brought a huge menu of interesting offerings.  Based on my time at the cart the red velvet and Elvis (with bacon flakes) were the two most popular varieties.  With many women opting for the red velvet and men opting more for the Elvis.  The caramel chocolate pretzel was also popular and was my favorite of the 6 flavors I tasted.  These cupcakes were superior to most of the cupcakes I have eaten in the last 6 months in New York City.   Creative flavors, moist and frosting that is not too sweet!

Wafels and Dinges also brought their full menu of Liege and Brussels waffles and all their normal toppings including Nutella, bananas, Belgian chocolate, etc.

    More selections from the show

The Liege wafel with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and chocolate is really one of the superb street desserts that I am aware of.  Served hot and crisp, as if a made-to-order dessert from a restaurant.  After being nominated and then missing out last year because their truck broke down- perhaps this will be there year.

    Amanda,

Yeah, the cupcake stop cupcakes were really solid - I mean it’s easy to think a good cupcake is a giant one from Crumbs - - but the ones Lev had out there today were superb.
