Le Pain Quotidien vegan cranberry scone

Rarely (if ever) has DessertBuzz influenced a product at an international restaurant chain.  However, that’s just what happened when I reviewed Le Pain Quotidien’s vegan cranberry scone last winter.  I liked the scone enough but I ultimately compared its appearance to a Tribble.

Well, last week I was in the new Le Pain Quotidien on 53 and Madison and noticed a much more refined and textured looking vegan cranberry scone.  To my surprise, it tasted like a whole new formulation.  The crust was crispier, the center more moist and there were definitely much more cranberries.  Best of all, this scone compared favorably to it’s butter soaked peers.  And if you’re vegan this thing is a no brainer.  One caveat: try to purchase and eat the scone in the morning.  If you wait until later it will dry out. Last year’s post is below for the few of you who missed all the hype last November.

    More on scones…

Le Pain Quotidien organic cranberry scone

I like scones. If I see a scone that looks good I’ll usually buy one irrespective of the time of day or whether I have just eaten lunch, dinner, dessert or even a 100% carb meal like pizza and beer.

This obviously means I eat a lot of them. many of the best scones are huge and double as a massive bread-bombs eliminating the need for a meal. One such scone is from Alice’s Tea Cup. Others are tiny and try to make up for their small size by being extra gourmet, like those from Bouchon Bakery or WichCraft (also excellent). Other superb scones, some of which I have yet to photo because the subject never made it home to the studio, include those from: Georgia’s Bakery, Payard and E.A.T..

The scone that looks like a Tribble

The organic cranberry scone from Le Pain Quotidien was fine though not as good as any of those mentioned above. But if you like cranberries and a heavy scone that looks like a Tribble, you should hook yourself up there are about 100 Le Pain Quotidiens in NYC.

Fun scone fact: According to Wikipedia nearly two thirds of the British population and 99% of the Scottish population pronounce it as /skɒn/, to rhyme with “con” and “John.”
